Fauna Project

Sixteen volunteers contributed to this week's survey. The weather was partly sunny, cool and breezy. The ants shown below are among a number of species known to perform a behavior called acidopore grooming, in which an individual applies its own venom (containing formic acid) to body parts that have been exposed to imported fire ant venom, essentially detoxifying it.
