The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Ten participants completed this week's survey under cold and heavily overcast conditions. Moths can have several defensive behaviors to evade predators. The Saltmarsh Caterpillar Moth shown below first remained immobile (looking vaguely like a chalky bird dropping), then showed its aposematic warning colors when disturbed. The last resort was to fly away, but it was cold and needed to vibrate its flight muscles for a long time.
