It was hot and partly cloudy as our party of three conducted this week's survey. The Camouflaged Looper shown below is the larva of the Southern Emerald, a beautiful green geometrid moth. The caterpillars are especially entertaining as they decorate themselves with bits of their food plant, usually the flowers. The one shown below has used red salvia blossoms, which don't help disguise it very much if it is on a green leaf. When the caterpillar molts, it also loses its ornamentation and must then reapply new bits.
