The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Four volunteers completed this week's survey under mostly sunny and hot conditions. One particular family of moths, the prominents, have caterpillars that are generally more interesting than the adult insects. Two examples are illustrated below. While the gregarious Datana larvae conspicuously display warning colors to discourage predators, the solitary Schizura caterpillar instead relies on cryptic camouflage for protection.
