Our group of five endured hot and sunny conditions during this survey on the first full day of summer. Moist, shady areas are inviting to both people and, unfortunately, mosquitoes. We do, however, have allies in our efforts against the pests. Tiny damselflies, quite numerous in the Gardens, fly slowly near the ground, hunting equally small prey. Mosquitoes feature prominently on their menu and we often see the predators devouring the leggy vermin (see photo below).
