The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Under misty, cool skies, this week's survey was conducted by seven volunteers. The Snakefly shown below is an unusual predator that appears only in the spring. It is related to lacewings and hunts in the branches of juniper where its banded body provides admirable camouflage. This individual did not emerge completely from its pupa shell (exuviae) and the remains are still stuck on its wings. It also has a bent back leg. These deformities can happen when conditions (such as temperature or humidity) are poor as the insect molts.
