Because of the large number of species (about 2,000 have been recorded in the Hill Country), moth identifications are often challenging. Note the similarity between the Bent-line Carpet and The Gem (male) shown below. The felt-like cocoon made by the Puss Caterpillar, or Asp, has a lid at the top; it will flip open when the adult Flannel Moth emerges.
