The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
A warm and cloudy morning turned sunny as six volunteers completed this week's survey. A combination of warm temperatures, sunshine and many flowers brought out plenty of nectar-seeking insects. After bees, our next most important pollinators of native plants are flies, and we certainly saw a wide variety. Some Honey Bees, however, were not pollinating but instead obtaining nectar from the base of flowers too long for their tongues to probe.
