Four volunteers participated in this week's survey. The weather was cool and foggy, turning warm and sunny by noon. While most native solitary bees gather pollen to feed their young, some species are parasitic. These "cuckoo bees" lay their eggs in the nests of other species, much like cowbirds parasitize other birds' nests. Cuckoo bees lack pollen-collecting hairs and often look very wasp-like. Three examples are shown below.
