Our four participants enjoyed a cool and sunny morning during this week's survey. The females of many wasps can sting if threatened, but their stingers are normally withdrawn inside their bodies and not visible. Ichneumons, though, often possess long ovipositors that are quite obvious (see photo below). These are harmless to us, as they are not stingers, have no venom glands, and are only used to deposit eggs into other insects so the grubs can feed as internal parasitoids.
