The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
A few showers punctuated the warm and partly cloudy morning as four volunteers participated in this week's survey. Spiders have a variety of methods for catching prey. Below are shown two very different examples. The Feather-legged Orbweaver is unusual because it does not have venom; victims are caught only in its web. The Crab Spider, on the other hand, is an ambush hunter that does not use silk to capture its food. Instead, it has potent venom for quickly killing large insects with a single bite.
