The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Five people conducted this survey under mostly overcast skies and very hot, humid conditions. The Frilled Orbweaver shown below is an unusual spider that catches its prey (male moths) at night by releasing a chemical that imitates a female moth's pheromones. The insects fly right into the spider's clutches! The Golden Tortoise Beetle is usually a bright metallic gold, but instantly changes its color to mimic a distasteful ladybird beetle when it is startled, as by having its photo taken.
