The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
It was sunny and very hot as our party of six completed the last survey for June. Robber flies, supreme aerial predators, are on the increase at this time of year. They frequently perch near flowers where bees and other insects will arrive. Another predator that is now active is the Cicada Killer. This huge wasp paralyzes a cicada, drags it down a hole it has dug, and lays an egg on the hapless insect. The wasp's grub will feed on the fresh prey that its mother provided.
