The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Although the high temperature and humidity under cloudless skies made it uncomfortable, our group of six enjoyed some interesting sightings. Glowworms are uncommon and unusual beetles; the females remain larva-like even at maturity, while the males have ornate antennae and large eyes. Females and larvae feed on millipedes, while the adult males do not feed at all. Another rarely seen insect is the Sand Cricket, or Pygmy Mole Cricket. In spite of the name, it is more closely related to grasshoppers.
