Constant rain and uncomfortably cold temperatures created challenging conditions for the eight volunteers on this week's survey. Lizards and snakes are in the largest order of reptiles: Squamata. While most lizards can close their eyes, the Mediterranean gecko (shown below) has immovable eyelids so its eyes, like those of snakes, are protected by a clear membrane and always open.
