Eleven volunteers contributed to this week's survey under hot and partly sunny conditions. About half the female Eastern Tiger Swallowtails in our area are black, in contrast to the species' usual yellow hue. While this mimicry of the toxic Pipevine Swallowtail is pretty convincing, there are still differences, including the faint stripes visible on the undersides of the wings in the example shown below.
