The weather was hot and sunny as ten participants completed this week's survey. The most distinctive feature of some bees, ants and wasps is the sting. Normally hidden from view until deployed, this effective tool is present only on female hymenoptera; it evolved as a modified ovipositor and only females lay eggs. The example shown below is the sting that injects venom to paralyze a cicada, the wasp's larval food.
