The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Fauna Project

Eleven volunteers participated in this week's survey under delightfully cool and sunny conditions. Like all orthoptera, tree crickets use only their rear pair of wings for flight. The front wings are simple covers in females, but those of males are modified to produce the characteristic songs that lure mates. The difference in structure is illustrated below.
