It was cold with light rain as three volunteers completed this week's survey. What do butterflies do when the weather is wet and 45°F? The answer is simple: not very much. Flight muscles must be warm enough to function and when they are not, the insects can only cling to vegetation and wait. All the butterflies shown below were immobile.
