The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Hot, sunny weather accompanied our seven volunteers on this week's survey. Galls are unusual plant growths caused by the activities of other organisms. Insects are frequently involved, as with the goldenrod leaf galls shown below, which contain midge larvae. In this case, however, a symbiotic fungus forms the gall structure and provides food for the larva. The fungus is actually collected by the female fly and deposited on the plant along with each egg.
