The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Fauna Project

A team of eight volunteers completed this week's survey under cool and sunny conditions. The scud shown below is a freshwater amphipod (a type of crustacean). These tiny animals can be found in the algae of the ponds. They are so delicate that if they are just dropped into the water, they get stuck on the surface tension and cannot break through. A simple prod with a finger, though, pushes them under and they will then swim away.
