The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Seven volunteers enjoyed rather cool and cloudy weather on this week's survey. The larvae of some hover flies (also called flower flies) eat aphids, so the females lay eggs on infested plants. In the photo below, an ichneumon called a Hover Fly Parasite has just laid its own egg inside the fly egg on the leaf. The fly larva will hatch, eat aphids and grow, with the parasite living inside it. The fly larva will pupate, then die; the adult ichneumon will eventually emerge.
