It was a cool and cloudy morning as four volunteers completed this week's survey. With large flocks of Cedar Waxwings showing up (see below), it is not too surprising that we happened to find a dead one. Although unfortunate for the individual involved, it gave us an opportunity to view the namesake "wax" on the wings up close. The red feather tips seem rather like plastic in my more contemporary view, but thankfully the birds were named before that substance was invented.
