Two participants completed this week's survey on a cool, breezy, mostly cloudy morning. The many kinds of white grubs that live in soil and compost piles are the larvae of scarab beetles. They are usually only seen when a gardener accidentally digs them up and then they curl into the familiar C-shape. But the larva of the Green June Beetle (shown below) has an additional behavior: it flips over on its back and, much like a caterpillar, crawls away.
