It was hot and sunny as four volunteers conducted the first survey of August. Some plants, such as the Partridge Pea, have features called extrafloral nectaries, which usually attract ants that will then protect the plant from herbivorous insects. The ant-mimicking true bug nymph shown below is sipping the nectar but will not benefit the plant. Instead, it also feeds on the plant's fluids, especially seed pods.
