The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
A few clouds helped hold the temperature down as our four participants completed this week's survey. We usually see Texas Spiny Lizards climbing on trees or resting on rock walls. When it is time for a female to lay eggs, though, she must excavate a nest hole in the ground. The lizard pictured below was so busy digging in the picnic area located by the visitor parking that she did not even notice the approach of footsteps. When she did finally hear a noise, the lizard dashed to safety up a nearby oak.
