The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Four volunteers conducted this week's survey during a delightfully cool, mostly overcast and breezy morning. Several katydid species have both brown and green color forms. We happened upon a nice example of this with two Haldeman's Shieldbacks: a brown male and a green female. The male has more of a humped back because his wings (almost hidden beneath the pronotum, or "shield") are large enough to produce his song. These predatory katydids sometimes hunt around lights that are attracting other insects.
