The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Seven people participated in this week's survey, under sunny, warm conditions. Caterpillars are still a dominant segment of the fauna, especially the Eight-spotted Forester (shown below), which is currently feeding on Grape, Virginia creeper and Peppervine. The Redstripe Ribbon Snake commonly encountered in the Gardens is a handsome local variety of a very widely distributed reptile with several regional subspecies. Only individuals found in central Texas have the distinctive dark red stripe.
