The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Our ten-person team enjoyed mostly cloudy, warm weather for this week's survey. We found several different small braconid wasps (one of which is pictured below). The larvae of these and the related ichneumons develop within other insects, especially caterpillars, killing them in the process. After noting a large population of caterpillars this year, it is reassuring to see that there are also plenty of beneficial insects that will help keep their numbers in check.
