The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
This was the first survey in quite some time to begin with clear skies. Our party of eight enjoyed cool temperatures throughout the morning. The cuckoo bee shown below was still in its sleeping position: holding onto the grass stem with its jaws. Cuckoo bees lay their eggs in the nests of solitary bees rather than collecting their own pollen and so have almost no hair on their bodies. The newly molted leafhopper (shown next to its old skin), will darken considerably as it dries out.
