The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Although the morning began cloudy, the sun eventually came out and heated things up quickly. Seven people participated this time. A number of unidentified Duskywing caterpillars found feasting on Barbados Cherry turned out to be Funereal Duskywings. These larvae normally eat legumes, but this additional host has been previously documented as well. Wasps in the genus Liris are known as Cricket Hunters, and the photo below shows one with its preferred prey. The paralyzed cricket will be buried alive after the wasp lays an egg on it. The grub that hatches out will then have a fresh source of meat.
