The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
The morning started out misty and cool as 12 people participated in this week's survey. Ground-dwelling insects and spiders topped the list at first, but clearing skies brought out plenty of butterflies and other insects looking for nectar. Orthopterans proved to be particularly colorful this time, including a pink Northern Green-striped Grasshopper and an orange Aztec Bandwing. Although there are a lot of caterpillars called "armyworms," only one, the Armyworm, has that official moniker.
