The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Five people enjoyed a cold and sunny morning during this week's survey. All insects must molt in order to grow, and the tiny sharpshooter shown below is no exception. As is typical, the old skin splits down the top of the thorax and the insect pushes its way out backwards, pulling its legs out last. In this photo, the white and yellowish colored sharpshooter has just started to emerge from the old brown skin; its head is still not even free.
