The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
The threat of rain didn't stop our party of three, but we did all keep umbrellas/rain coats with us. The mosquitoes were the biggest challenge. However, two impressive sightings made the effort worthwhile: a pair of mating Giant Walkingsticks (the female is the largest member of this insect group), and a Swamp Darner that rested momentarily in the archway between the library and administration buildings. This dragonfly (one of the largest in the U.S.) is not common in our area but is known to enter doors and windows, which are probably similar to its usual shady roosting areas.
