A couple miles into the hike at South Mineral, the remains of a mining operation still stand in mute testimony to when the area was considered more valuable for its inner riches than for its outer beauty. Peri, being an artistic sort, enjoyed both the lovely surroundings and the groundsquirrel-infested old buildings.
