Evelyn, Val's mother, was 9 years old on May 12, 1940, when she had her communion ceremony at St. Bernard's (Catholic) Church in Joliet, IL. The picture was taken in the driveway to her family's house, located on three adjoining lots that included a large garden and many fruit trees. Those in the background of this photo are pear and wild cherry, all in bloom. One funny thing that happened was that her last name was misspelled on the certificate, an error that was remedied six years later, on May 28, 1946, when she was confirmed with the correct spelling.
