The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
A team of eleven completed this week's survey under cold, windy, cloudy conditions following a rainy night. Flying insects must be warm enough for their wing muscles to work, but their temperature tolerances vary quite a bit. Shown below, the grounded red wasp can only walk to more favorable conditions while the yellowjacket and flower fly are capable of flight. Note that the latter two have dense hairs on the sides of their thorax which help retain muscle-produced heat.
