The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Fauna Project

A team of fifteen completed this week's survey; the weather was hot and partly sunny. The armadillo shown below is one of four young siblings seen in the Family Garden. Unique among mammals, after fertilization the blastocyst of an armadillo divides into four embryos attached to a single placenta. If all survive to birth, the result is a litter of identical quadruplets.
