The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Ten people contributed to this week's survey under mostly cloudy, windy and very warm conditions. The underside view of the Saltmarsh Caterpillar's head presented below shows the numerous appendages that surround the mouth. A piece of leaf is disappearing into the mandibles, which are surrounded by five yellow structures: the outermost are antennae, the pair below them are the maxillary palps and the single one in the middle at the bottom is the spinneret, which produces silk for the cocoon.
