Fauna Project

The morning was hot, humid and partly sunny as ten volunteers completed this week's survey. Blister beetles in the genus Nemognatha have a pair of long filiform galeae located between their mandibles. The galeae, which are part of the maxillae, can be held together to form a proboscis that allows the beetle to suck nectar from flowers just like a butterfly. These anatomical features can be seen in the image below.
