The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Fauna Project

A team of nine participated in this week's survey. The morning started very cool and cloudy, then gradually turned sunny. Bird grasshoppers are so named because they usually escape danger by flying into trees. When the weather is too cold and such flight is impossible, their second line of defense is to brandish sharp leg spines and kick their attacker (see photo below).
