Fauna Project

It was very hot and mostly sunny as nine volunteers carried out this week's survey. The grass skippers are a group of small butterflies whose caterpillars feed on grasses or sedges. The adults bask in a unique posture where each wing is at a different angle. This odd arrangement, called the jet-plane position, is nicely illustrated in the Fiery Skipper shown below.
