The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
A team of three participated in this week's survey under warm, overcast conditions with intermittent light rain. The pair of tree crickets shown below are engaged in an unusual behavior characteristic of this genus. They have mated, as the small round spermatophore hanging from the rear of the female indicates, and the male is continuing to sing while the female sips a secretion from the metanotal gland located behind the base of his raised front wings.
