The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Our 200th survey since the 2010 initiation of this program turned out to be quite interesting in terms of weather, beginning with warm conditions and rain, then gradually clearing to partly sunny and hot. Six volunteers participated. Nearly all insects with wings are adult and they will not molt again during their life. Mayflies are an exception to that rule; the subimago (penultimate stage) has functional, though cloudy-looking, wings, as shown below. This stage will last only a day and the insect will molt one more time before reaching sexual maturity.
