The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Three volunteers participated in an abbreviated survey this week, due to the arrival of a cold front with rain, wind, and falling temperatures. Larvae of many beetle species are not easy to observe, but some feed right out in the open alongside adults. One example is shown below. The larva of this particular leaf beetle protects itself from predators by retaining its feces on its back. This keeps small enemies at bay by forming a barrier, and also probably grosses out larger animals.
