The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Three volunteers completed this survey; conditions were cold and partly sunny. Flies that mimic wasps gain a slight survival advantage if their predators hesitate to tackle a stinging insect. A fly may have wasp-like colors (usually yellow and black), shape or other features that give the appropriate impression. In the case of the feather-legged fly shown below, the expanded back legs mimic the relatively larger such appendages on wasps, which characteristically hang down in flight.
