The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
Temperatures near freezing quickly rose to pleasantly cool under full sun as three participants completed this week's survey. The Saltmarsh Moth shown below is nocturnal and relies on its white with black spots coloration to mimic a large and unappetizing bird dropping when at rest. If this doesn't discourage a predator, the moth then flashes the normally hidden orange on its abdomen and underwings, a universal color to indicate chemical defenses.
