Three volunteers completed this week's survey; it was cold, windy and cloudy. While black flies, or buffalo gnats (see photo below), are notorious blood-sucking pests in northern states, those living in this area are rarely noticed. One reason is that our local species feed mainly on birds and mammals other than humans.
