The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Fauna Project |
A cold, foggy morning gave way to sunny skies as three participants completed this week's survey. Tree crickets are often found around flowers and low-growing shrubs, where their green color provides excellent camouflage. The males vibrate their large front wings (see image below), producing a trilling call to attract females. Although easily heard, determining the exact location of a singing male is tricky because the wings focus the sound away from the source; an advantage when deceiving predators.
