The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Fauna Project

Eight people conducted this week's survey; it was hot and sunny. Sparse green patches in the dry fields yielded a few grasshoppers this time. Their camouflage is sometimes amazing, perfectly matching the dirt and dead foliage. The Eastern Amberwing, at 1 inch in length our smallest dragonfly, has markings and a perching habit that mimics a wasp. The final four images shown below tell the story of one queen ant that we watched for about 10 minutes.
